AGNOSTICISM

Image of a Quill Pen

Agnosticism is any view claiming that knowledge is unobtainable in a give area, whether merely in practice or in principle. In religious matters, agnosticism should be distinguished from atheism which views God as non-existent.

Thomas Henry Huxley invented this term in 1869. At that time many were troubled by Darwin’s evolution theory due to its suggestion that life was without direction and meaningless. Huxley’s view on the issue was if there is no direction or purpose give to life by God, then man must take the initiative and give him purpose and reason to live. He invented the term “agnostic” to describe those who believed in God, but saw no proof of His existence.[9]
